    Greetings!

On behalf of New Directions for Student Services (NDSS), we are excited to announce a call for authors for articles in a special issue tentatively titled Innovative Approaches to Meeting College Students' Basic Needs.

Student basic needs is an emerging and critical topic in US higher education. For the first time, in 2023 the federal government released data on students experiencing food insecurity and homelessness, indicating that 23% of undergraduates and 12% of graduate students are experiencing food insecurity, and 8% of undergraduates and 5% of graduate students are experiencing homelessness (NPSAS, 2023). This translates to millions of students in US higher education experiencing these barriers to academic success.

This NDSS issue will bring together practitioners and researchers to explore multiple facets of student basic needs in higher education, share innovative practices, and identify gaps in what we know and in services currently provided. In particular, we are interested in exploring the current state of this work in different settings, different institutional types, with different student populations, and identifying how student needs may be evolving – or growing – after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The purposes of this issue are to 1) explore innovative approaches to addressing student basic needs, 2) provide applied examples of this work that may be replicated elsewhere, and 3) explore the experience and impact of basic need insecurities in different contexts and for different populations.

If you are interested in contributing to this exciting project, please click here to learn more about the project's timeline, a quick FAQ section, an editorial introduction and framing, the basic issue structure, an overview of what to include in your summary proposal, advice on writing style from NDSS/Wiley, brief bios of the editors, and some key references to consider including in your articles. Prospective authors should submit a 1-2 page summary as outlined in the document linked above by April 1, 2024.

Thank you for considering joining us on this journey! We welcome your expertise and experience on this most urgent topic.
