Hi Jen,
We were looking at moving more towards an open concept for our student involvement area. At the time, my campus had a limited number of office spaces that organizations could use (up to 30 spaces to meet the needs of 140 clubs). The open concept we were presenting was to create more work space so that more people could actually utilize the space. There is currently a perceived notion that the student involvement space is only for people that have an assigned office/work space. The concept was to create several different pockets where organizations can meet, do group projects, and really create a community in our student involvement space.
In our plan, there was still a designated work space for Student Government, the Campus Activities Board, and Fraternity/Sorority Life. All of these entities were housed out of the same office.
I know this doesn't address wanting to see other open concept student unions, but it does provide additional rationale from other campuses.
Thanks,
Kyle
