Community Co-Lead Intro

Posted by Laura Stevens on Jun 3, 2019 2:46 pm

Hi Sustainability COP Members,
It’s great to be here!  I’m thrilled to be working with Jordy as the group’s co-leader.      My name is Laura and I work for the Office of Sustainability at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) as the campus’ Solid Waste and Recycling Specialist.  I’m new to the ACUI and still getting my feet wet with all the community has to offer.  I look forwarding to continuing my exploration of ACUI and joining you all in discussion around sustainable practices in higher education.
For planting the seeds, I’m interested in understanding what pressing issues are present at your campus?  For example, UWM is currently facing major hurdles with our waste and recycling contract, especially as it relates to recycling.  The news from our vendor is forcing us to restructure our operations and messaging for all waste and recycling practices.
Another example is renewable energy.  Has your campus started the conversation with campus stakeholder and local energy companies?  If no, what are the hurdles?  If yes, what resources do you need to keep the conversation going?
I’m looking forward to hearing from you and getting to know you all!
Talk soon,
Laura

Thanks for taking on the co-leadership role, Laura! I'd be happy to host an online chat/call to talk about lessons learned in solar development both on/off our campus at UMD.  We even have a student organization focused on solar implementation on campus at: http://d.umn.edu/sustainability/take-action/student-organizations and info on all of our solar assets is available at d.umn.edu/solar

Hi Mindy,
Thank you for the response and for offering to host an online chat/call for solar!  That would be a great interactive opportunity for the group.  Jordy and I will be sure to reach out once we're ready with the planning.  Thank you, again, and I'm looking forward to the topic.  - Laura
