Programming Assessment!

Hello all!

I work in the Student Union at The University of Texas at San Antonio. I oversee the programming staff and our game room.  I have been asked to come up with a more comprehensive method for program assessment and reporting.

Currently, I report on quantitative data such as attendance, total cost of program, and event collaborations.  However, I hope to get some tips and best practices on assessments methods used at other schools to report on program effectiveness.

What type of assessment reporting do you use at your institution for events/game room?
How do you measure overall effectiveness and quality of your programs on campus?
How do you evaluate learning outcomes related to program involvement in a meaningful way?

Hi Tabitha

Thanks for reaching to the group! I don't have information about game room assessment, but happy to share how we assess our late night program at Michigan. 

I’ve been over our late night program for 2 years, and have seen a pretty drastic change in how we assess our program. The first year, it was all about just trying to get our students to keep better track of the number of people attending our programs. This past year, we were able to get a survey out each semester to the students who attended. We worked with our Student Life assessment team to create the survey, and sent it out via Campus Labs. We asked student attendees to show their student IDs before they participate in activities, and swipe those cards to get their demographic information (emails, year in school, major, etc.). I would like to work on surveying each our programs to better understand what activities, themes are most popular.

We measure effectiveness by attendance numbers and what our students say. Most of the survey is scale questions, but we also include a couple open ended questions at the end of the survey to capture some qualitative data. As we compile our data and create our end of year report to share out with our stakeholders, we're able to better understand what was effective and where are some areas we have for growth.

Sure! See our Year End Report and Infographic attached! Both of which were created by my grad student. I will also get this uploaded to our Community Library, so you can access it at later date.
