Space for Esports competitions

Posted by Kerrin Lyles on Dec 7, 2018 12:28 pm

Hello Everyone,

My institution is looking into the idea of creating a space for our students that participate in Esports competitions.  Does anyone have any information about this on your campuses?  Where is the space located or how big is the space being used?  Any information would be helpful.

Thanks,

Hi Kerrin-
Here is some information on the space being built at Ohio State:

It will not be in the union, but is in a student life administrative facility that is also in close proximity to some of our recreation sports venues.

Hi Kerrin,
Here is info on the Western Michigan eSports program: https://wmuesports.com/

We just started it this year, an initiative supported by the President, with significant start-up funding.  There is a 200 seat auditorium on the edge of campus that was under utilized and it was re-purposed  as the eSports gaming center.  If you have further questions I can send you the name and contact info of someone close to the program.

Best,

Paul

Kerrin,

The University of Washington is about to open our new Esports Arena and Gaming Lounge over the winter quarter.  Here is our site sharing progress of the space/program: http://depts.washington.edu/thehub/hub-games/esports/ and I'm happy to connect if there is anything we can do to help support/guide from our lessons learned.

Hi Kerrin,

ACUI Bulletin had a piece on e-sports in unions (and elsewhere) just last month: https://www.acui.org/resources/bulletin/bulletin-detail/2018/11/02/esports-a-growing-trend

Let me know if you have any questions as I gathered quite a bit of additional information.

Regards,
Steve

Justin, when is your space set to open? Our team may just take a field trip down there to check it out as we are talking about creating our own here at Western.

Jenn

PS thank you to everyone, this is all very helpful information!
