  • 1.  Lost and Found procedures

    Posted 05-18-2020 12:15
    Good Morning:

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, has anyone had conversations regarding Lost and Found procedures (collection, storage, retrieval, disposal)? In our Union, we are the central hub for all items found on campus. Typically items are brought to our Welcome Desk and logged in and tagged. We store the items in a storage cabinet for 60 days and then if it is not retrieved we do the following: if it is something donate-able we donate, if its trash we trash, if it is property with potential personal information (USB etc) we destroy. Common items brought to us are the following:

    • Travel mugs, water bottles, cups
    • clothing, shoes, bags
    • purses, wallets
    • phones, personal electronics, headphones, watches
    • books
    • other items
I would be very interested to hear any thoughts as we review operations/procedures for our Union
    Thank you,

Here at A & M Commerce we divide our lost and found into high value (Phone, wallet, cash) and low value items (keys, mugs, water bottles)  All of the high value items go to UPD within 24 hours.  The low value items stay in location 1 for 1 week, they are moved to location 2 and after 60 days are donated to the neighborhood good will.  We use a free software called Chargerback.  www.chargerback.com  This is an easy to use software that separates items which are found or lost.  Clients can go to our website and enter lost items and if we find them they get matched and the client gets an email stating that we found them.  High Value items are logged and sent to UPD where the clients pick them up.

In light of Covid-19, once we reopen we will wipe down high value items with disinfectant wipes.  The low value items will be bagged up to prevent the spread of virus (germs).

At Central Missouri, our policy is similar with a few differences. Anything given to us that holds food or liquid is only kept for a week until we trash it due to germs, mold, etc. Clothing folded and wrapped with a rubber band while stored (if the person lost it claims it, they see we took care of their item in a caring manner) and is washed before donating after the 60 day period. We will be bagging and wiping down items upon reopening.
