  • 1.  Child Development Center managed by the Union...?

    Posted 02-16-2022 11:58
Good morning to all, really looking forward the Annual Conference next month!

Some years ago, our campus constructed a child development center was intended to be a pipeline for our College of Education's early childhood teachers. The revenue generation would come from faculty/staff and students who would have a need for convenient, affordable child-care that was right on campus. However, the endeavor never experienced the imagined success and has suffered greatly due to COVID.
Being that we are great facility managers and generators of revenue, administration has identified the Union as the most qualified area to resurrect the operation.

Does anyone have experience with a child development center that can be shared?

    Thanks in advance!

Herbert - In my last role at Grand Valley State University I oversaw a Child Development Center that was profitable and remained so through COVID.  There are a few reasons, in my opinion: the CDC is accredited (also important for the School of Ed), childcare demand is high (the area lacks facilities), and it began accepting children of non-student/faculty/staff persons (which stabilizes demand and serves the area as a public university).  If you want to private message me I can fill in some blanks and perhaps even connect you with the right person to provide more detail.  It's often surprising to others that childcare is not an automatic auxiliary revenue producer. Best wishes with this.

    Good morning,
I manage Associated Students at San Jose State University and we are an auxiliary on the campus (like many AS and Student Unions in CA). I oversee a child development center which is operating well and generating revenues. We did remain open during COVID with guidelines and requirements but stayed open to serve the student parents as well as campus faculty and staff.
You can also contact me via email and I can answers questions. I'll be at the Chicago Conference if you want to connect.
