  • 1.  Virtual Training

    Posted 01-04-2022 10:01
With an increase in covid-19 Omicron cases in our area, our President has asked us to reduce gatherings on campus this week.  With that said, we had planned on hosting live student staff training.  However, we are having to pivot to an online format.  In 2021 we prerecorded sessions and posted them on a private youtube channel.
Does anyone have any other options for holding a virtual training session?

    Thanks

Hi Michael - We have been doing hybrid trainings for our student employees, some come in person, some join online via zoom and we record it for those who aren't able to make the time/date. We typically make a "quiz" for those who watch recording to make sure they got the content we were hoping to pass along.
Let me know if you have questions about this.
    Thanks,

    Eve

    Hi Michael!
We were also planning to host in-person training at Temple University, but have decided to go virtual. We always have a two day training in the Spring since the majority of our students are returning. We have decided to reduce it to a one-day training on Zoom from 9am-4:30-ish, covering only the necessary areas of information for the staff as a whole followed by a kahoot, and then breaking into service area training for the afternoon. Our newer Building Managers and Game Room staff will then have 4-6 hours of shadow shifts. once they are on campus, to get them up to speed on things in the building.
    Hope this helps! :)

    Hi Michael,
We did a number of live virtual student employee trainings over the last 18+ months. We learned a few different things from these....
We've utilized Zoom, Google Meet, Canvas and WebEx. We found the Zoom and Canvas combo worked best.
    1. Make it as short a day as feasible to cover the information you want to cover. Really ask the group planning the training what content is most critical and can reasonably be delivered in a live online format. If you extend into 2 meal times, it is too long for live online.
    2. Give various 5-10 minute breaks throughout.
    3. Utilize breakout rooms for small group chats and discussions or team specific content.
    4. We used Canvas to post information we wanted to them to read before the training sessions and had quizzes for that content as well.
    5. We sent an assessment after training to be sure the students got the content.
    6. The students seemed to enjoy when we had a mix of different content types most and a variety of staff presenting material. Each of our presentations had a mix of videos to watch, chat discussion, breakouts, case studies, 'zoom' ice breakers (go find 'X' in your room, pet show and tell..), etc.

The sessions were recorded then posted on the Canvas page for anyone who had an excused absence for missing training.

    Hope this helps.
