  • 1.  Lost & Found Items

    Posted 09-03-2024 20:03
    Hello Everyone,

We are currently working on updating our campus-wide Lost and Found policies and would love to gather some insights from your institutions. If you manage Lost and Found at your university, would you be able to share your list of accepted and not accepted items? We are interested in learning what other universities include in their guidelines to help inform our own processes.

Any input or examples would be greatly appreciated!

    Kind Regards,
    Jevon Smith

Our Lost & Found receives a wide range items daily.

Accepted items include clothing, books, cellphones, glasses, keys, water bottles , jewelry, wallets/purses, any driver's license or university identification, backpacks, and electronics.

Not Accepted Items: Items that present a sanitation risk, food, drinks, and containers.

After 30 days in our lost and found system, non-high-value items are donated. Also wallets/purses that contain more than $50 and high-value items ($100+) are promptly turned over to our campus police.

Our Lost and Found will accept anything found on campus except for the following:

    • Wet, dirty, or soiled items
    • Underwear, socks, bras, bathing suits, or other undergarments
    • Towels, pillows, sheets, blankets, or other bedding
    • Toiletries, cleaning products, chemicals, or detergents
    • Food items, containers with food inside, or other perishables
    • Full water bottles, coffee mugs, or other liquid-filled containers (we ask finders to empty fluids before turning in, however we commonly bend this rule and empty water bottles ourselves)
    • Bicycles, skateboards, strollers, or any other "wheeled vehicles" (Finders must contact UW Police - we simply don't have the space for items this big)
    • Knives with blades longer than 6 inches, other weapons, controlled/illegal substances, and paraphernalia (Finders must contact UW Police)
    • Any items deemed by HUB staff to be unsanitary and/or hazardous for storage

Duration of item retention ranges from 7-60 days depending on the value of the item. When items include cash over $3, it is recorded on receipt paper, and the cash is stored with the HUB Cashiers located next door. We host a monthly Lost and Found sale, with the revenue going toward student trainings, office materials, or other Information Desk improvements. Items that are not/cannot be sold are either donated or destroyed.

Here is our full L&F information, which contains information about our claims process, item disposal, and other policy: https://hub.washington.edu/campus-services/hub-lost-found/

    Hope this helps!
