Game Room/Theater/Day Time Programming Ideas

Posted by Gillian Perry on May 14, 2019 10:08 am

Hi all! We are looking at our programming model in our game room and theater to get some fresh ideas. We are also looking to shift more toward day time programming with the idea that students can drop in/out as needed/wanted. What are some unique programs that you've done/plan to do specifically in your game room and movie theaters, or just general programs that are smaller scale and have gone well for you?

As a side note, also interested in how often/what types of films people are showing on campus, as we've seen a significant decline in film attendance for the past few years.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Gillian.
Our Game Room is our go to for noon programming.
In our Game Room we have video gaming, so occasionally we will hold a launch party when a new video game is released.  The event is not costly, we may giveaway free popcorn. It helps us promote the Game Room in general and gives gamers a chance to try a new game for free.

We have significantly "beefed" up our inventory of board games in the Game Room over the last 2 years which also helps students looking for free entertainment.  We host board game tournaments and other days we do "trivia" events around a popular show, like The Office.  Again, very low cost events that any student can participate in between classes.

The Student Union has strayed away from movie showings at this point - the Campus Programming Board hosts them about twice a semester and usually around a big week (Halloween, Homecoming). Otherwise, movie showings have had very low participation and are costly.

Hi Gillian,

At my former institution, Temple University, we hosted a variety of events and programs in the Game Room and Movie Theater.  Jason Levy and I presented on it at Annual Conference this past year, I attached a copy of our presentation if you want to take a look at it!  During the day we did a lot of specials in the Game Room that provided a discount on the equipment.  We also hosted monthly tournaments that were held in the early evening.  We did a full calendar of programming in the Movie Theater from bi-weekly weekend showings of pre-release movies to special events like Dinner & A Movie and Double Features.  If you have any questions or would like to talk more in-depth about the programs we offered, please let me know!

Gillian,

You might consider cross-posting this in the On Campus Recreation & Leisure community discussions, as they may have some good insights for you.

Thank you,
Scarlett
