Mics for videoconferencing?

Posted by Kris Vatter on Mar 13, 2019 1:00 pm

My IT has proposed setting up one meeting room with mics hanging from the ceiling, so it's always ready for videoconferencing.  The mics picked are visually distracting - they look like mini planets hanging down.  In addition, a student group took them down one night, so now IT is concerned about theft.  Since this was a cost-effective choice, does anyone have any suggestions for a something better?  Thanks.  Kris Vatter -St Olaf

Hi Kris - we have similar ceiling hanging mics and use Clearone 910-001-013-W. Never had any complaints about aesthetics nor had a concern of anyone pulling them down but I am on a graduate professional campus so the hope is they are a bit more responsible.

The type of microphone you are referring to is an industry standard and requires no additional set up.  Another choice would be Boundary Microphones which you put on a table top in front of a presenter- however the audience would not be heard.  In addition, boundary microphones need to be set up for every event.  I have two rooms with the microphones (Vaddio brand) you mentioned and had no issues.  You may want to consider adding room signage explaining what the microphones are for.
I'd also suggest that you post this in the Technology Community as they are an amazing resource.
