Electronic Usage in Student Employee Positions

Good Afternoon Everyone, 

This afternoon our leadership team had a conversation about electronic usage for student employees in their various roles. These roles include Office Assistant, Information Assistant, AV techs, Marketing, Student Managers, Facilities Assistants, etc. 

With the GenZ generation, we have been running into issues of students wanting to bring in additional electronic devices during their shifts, such as tablets, laptops, etc.  The use of these additional devices are claimed to be for reading e-textbooks and doing online homework. As we want to support students in their academic pursuit I am wondering if anyone has created policies that work for both staff and students that cultivate both their job responsibilities and the ability for them to focus on homework during down/slow times. 

Any information surrounding this will be helpful to our staff.

Hi Rochelle - Homework is allowed as long as it does not impact your shift and you have finished all other duties. This and other similar policies are outlined in our community standards for staff. We not allow full screen videos and headphones are not allowed unless you are part of a breakdown/setup crew assuming the client is not present.

Getting the job done before digging into homework (on laptops or in textbooks) is key, and something that is frequently challegned, primarily because "the job" may just be the immediate tasks, and not the ongoing things like building rounds, tidying up storage, looking for lost equipment, etc.
We also do not permit headphones/ear buds while on the shift, for operational and desk staff, and do not allow cell phone use at reception desk areas. 

It's a constant battle, especially when things seem kind of slow during the workday.
