Free Public Telephone

Greetings colleagues and friends, our university telecom recently removed our free (local numbers only) telephone from our facility and to get it back we're going to have to pay a fee. Curious to know if other Urban Union colleagues have free public telephones anymore and other thoughts on why we should/shouldn't have them. A bit of an internal debate here and I'd be interested in hearing other perspectives.

Hi Joe - we have similar phones in my student center at Temple University. I am paying a monthly fee for the line though. The switch to paying for it happened quite a few years ago now. We have one phone on our conference floor and 2 in our recreation center. Cell tower coverage is almost non-existent in the two floors below ground and considering a large part of our community is the Temple Health System the medical professionals appreciate the easy access to a phone when their beeper goes off.

When I arrived at UW-Milwaukee in 2006 we had six or seven local call only public phones in the building. We were paying monthly fees for all lines (around $30/unit), and decided to do an analysis of the actual usage of the equipment. When we found that almost all usage was non-university related, we phased out the existence of the equipment over a few years. I recommend pulling the call logs and having someone go through them. The elimination of the phones cut down on incidents (both in the areas where phones were located and overall).

Hey Joe,

We do not have any in our Student Center facilities at Georgia State University and I haven't heard a request for any in the 5 years I've been here.
