Challenges and Opportunities of Urban Unions

Hello, I am Boyd Beckwith, your recently appointed leader for the Urban Unions community of practice (COP). With your help, I hope to make this community of practice an additional benefit of membership in ACUI. Together we can make this virtual community a place that everyone can feel comfortable asking questions, sharing resources, and finding ways to do our jobs better. I am currently the Senior Director of the Student Center at Georgia State University with six campuses in the Atlanta metropolitan region. Our largest campus, with over 32,000 students is in the heart of downtown Atlanta. More information about me is available from

Please be sure to update your notifications regarding communication from the various communities of practice. Once you have logged in to the ACUI website, select "My Notification" from the pull-down menu and then specify how often you want to receive notifications from your selected communities of practice.

To kick things off, I'd like to crowdsource a list of opportunities and challenges that individuals who work at Urban Unions may encounter. I'll jump start the list with the first ones:

Opportunity – a variety of cultural and sporting event opportunities to expose your students to

Challenge – a significant number of students may rely on mass transit to get to and from class so that shuttles may need to be provided so that they can attend a department-sponsored event off campus that is not public transit adjacent.

If you'd like to help moderate some discussions, and/or contribute in some other way to the Urban Unions COP, just let me know. I can be reached directly at 404-413-1864 or

Thanks for your leadership of the UU-COP Boyd!

Opportunity: I think one big opportunity is our ability to be a 1st impression touch point for the University to folks who aren't aware there is a university at all. IUPUI sits within one of the largest health-industrial complexes in the state of Indiana and we often find guests in town for medial services discovering IUPUI through our facility as a they find their way to the Chick-fil-A or parking garage.

Challenges: Balancing usage demands between the students and guests particularly for lounge and other public spaces. It can get crowded and occasionally our students can feel somewhat crowded out.
