Student Leader Roles in Community Engagement

Posted by Erin Williamson on Dec 11, 2018 2:48 pm

Hello all!
I'm looking for some help/inspiration. My office supervises a team of student leaders called Community Engagement Specialists. These students are volunteers in our office, each paired with a non-profit in our community. They plan, market, and evaluate service projects for their peers. Trouble is, we struggle to recruit and retain students in this role. Some questions for anyone who has students in this or a similar role:
  • What are your student volunteers called?
  • Any particular marketing strategy during recruitment of this role that works for your office?
  • What seems to attract/retain your students to this role? (Other than $, that's not in the cards right now)
TIA,

Perhaps an incentive could be accumulated civic engagement hours.

Our clubs and organizations have a required civic engagement quota to fill each quarter in order to stay in good standing.

Our Center for Leadership and Community Engagement has student interns, volunteers, and employees acting as program leaders.

Thanks for this suggestion, Brian! I like the idea of promoting that during our recruitment. The students do accumulate quite a bit of hours in engagement work.
