Staffing Numbers and Structure

Hi Everyone,
      We are preparing to open a new student union on our campus and I am looking for comparison data to justify our proposed wage budget for professional staff and student employees.  If you would be willing to share the following information, I would really appreciate your help!

1. Square footage of the space included in your union operations area
2. Number of student staff members you employ
3. Does your area oversee any information desks?
4.  Hours of operation
5.  Operations Organization Chart (including professional staff and student staff)

Here’s information for our Union Complex. Let me know if you have any questions.

  1. Over 329,000 square feet for 4 facilities
  2. We have about 40 students
  3. We have 1 information desk and 1 event services desk (this desk is our primary desk for all information)
  4. Hours
    1. Monday – Thursday: 7 AM – 10 PM
    2. Friday: 7 AM – 7 PM
    3. Saturday: 8:30 AM – 7 PM
    4. Sunday: 8:30 AM – 10 PM

Below are the answers to your questions from our Student Center University Crossing at UMass Lowell. Please let me know if you have any questions.

2. Number of student staff members you employ:25
3. Does your area oversee any information desks? Yes, we have (1) Welcome/Information Desk in the Lobby of our building.
4.  Hours of operation:
Monday-Friday: 8 AM - 12 AM
Sat.: 9 AM - 12 AM
Sun.: 9 AM - 12 AM

5.  Operations Organization Chart (including professional staff and student staff)
Assistant Dean of Student Affairs -->Associate Director of Student Affiars - University Crossing -->Program Coordinator (supervision split between operations and student activities) -->Graduate Fellow --> Student Building Manager --> Student Welcome Desk Staff

The Norris University Center at Northwestern University is:
1. Square footage of the space included in your union operations area: 160,000
2. Number of student staff members you employ :225
3. Does your area oversee any information desks? Yes, we have (1) Center Desk on the first floor of our building.
4.  Hours of operation:
Monday-Friday: 8 AM - 12 AM
Sat.: 8 AM - 12 AM
Sun.: 10 AM - 12 AM

5.  Operations Organization Chart (including professional staff and student staff)
Executive Director>Director of Events and Programs>Assistant Director of Events>Production Coordinator>Production Supervisors (students)>Production Attendants (students.

Additionally AD of Event oversees> Operations, Technology, Performance, and Event Production.

Maucker Union at the University of Northern Iowa is:
1. 120,000 sq. ft
2. 26 (includes custodial, desk assistants, building managers, setup, event coordinators)
3. No
4.  M-Th 6:30 am - 12:00 am
     F 6:30 am - 7:00 pm
     S 12:00 pm - 7:00 pm
     Su 12:00 pm - 12:00 am

    Professional Staff:   Director--Business & Operations Manager--Clerk--Secretary
    Student Staff: Director supervises Building Managers, Event Coordinators and Setup, Business & Operations Manager supervises Custodial, Desk Assistants, Tech Crew

Hi Amy, we are including both our indoor and outdoor spaces operations and event spaces for Oregon State University Memorial Union.

1. Square footage of the space included in your union operations area  197480 sq. ft.

2. Number of student staff members you employ.  150 for events, maintenance, bowling, custodial, graphic design, information desk and activities.
3. Does your area oversee any information desks?  1 Information Desk

4.  Hours of operation  Mon - Thurs 7:00 AM - 10 PM, Friday & Saturday 7:00 AM - 12 AM, Sunday 10:30 AM - 10 PM

5.  Operations Organization Chart (including professional staff and student staff)  Director of Operations, 3 Event Coordinators, 1 Office Staff.  
Our Maintenance and Custodial Staff also service nine other spaces buildings on top of the Sq. Ft. listed above.  Director of Facilities, Operations Manager, Custodial Supervisor,  3 Custodial Coordinators, 8 custodians, 1 electrician, 1 refrigeration, 2 trades maintenance and 1 lock smith.

Hi Deb.  Please see below for Temple Student Center Operations info.
We have 2 facilities on 2 campuses and we manage a variety of spaces in other areas on our main campus.
The Main Campus Student Center is approx. 200,000 sq ft and the Student Faculty Center on our Health Sciences Center Campus is approx. 140,000.
On Main Campus we have approx. 70 student staff.
On HSC we have approx. 30.
Main campus has an Information Desk - it's just inside the amin entrance of the building and was recently renovated.
Main Campus hours are - 7A - Midnight, Mon - Fri and 10A - Midnight, Sat & Sun
HSC Hours are - 6:30A - 10P Mon - Thu, 6:30A - 8P, Fri, Normally closed on weekends (will open for special events, etc.)
   No Info desk in the SFC, but the amin office has a reception dek and it is just inside the building.
   This building has a security guard at the front door at a recently renovated desk.
The Org Chart for the Dept is attached.
   Main Campus is 7 FTE including me
   SFC is 5 FTE
We don't have our own facilities, HK or other trades as those staff are proved by central facilities, etc.

1. 84,000 sq ft
2. 50 students (as managers, technicians, box office, info desk, setup crew, office assistants, campus operators, game room attendants, event crew)
3. One Information Desk/Box Office and one Reception Desk/Telephone Operator
4. Hours in-session are:  M - W + F  7 AM - 11 PM;  Th 7 AM - 12 MN;  Sat 9 AM - 11 PM;  Sun 12 N-11 PM  (not in session...  M - F 8 AM - 5 PM)
