Facility Front Desks

We are currently in the process of remodeling our facility and are moving our primary staff operations to the lower level. However, I am still of the opinion that we need a staffed permanent, or at least temporary, "front desk" located outside of our primary entrance on the 1st floor. I am interested in perspectives regarding different front desk models.
- do you have a front desk that is separately located from your primary offices/operation and how does that work?
- do you have a front desk that is partially or only temporarily staffed?
- other models that you might suggest?

We have an Information Center connected to our main operations office (which is also the University Scheduling Center).  We are located on the 1st floor of our facility - adjacent to the primary entrance (closest to our parking lot).

Our Information Center acts as the "hub" for our facility, and is often the front desk of the University because we are located next to the largest parking lot on campus as well as the primary host to most public-facing, non-athletic University functions.

Our Information Center provides the following services to our campus community:
- post office for all departmental offices in the facility (dining, bookstore, wellness, recreation, student involvement, student government, US Bank, operations, campus activities, and radio)
- campus lost and found (we hold onto the items for 2-weeks before moving to police services)
- student computing and printing station (3 access terminals and 2 printers available to students) - we are one the heaviest used printing stations on campus next to the library
- 2-hour laptop loan system (we have 50 Macbooks available to check out - laptops can connect to the printers as well)
- Poster approvals for all public postings on campus (clubs, organizations, departments, etc need to get their flyers approved and stamped by our staff before posting on community boards)

We staff students to operate Monday - Friday 7am - 8pm and Saturday - Sunday 10am - 8pm.  We usually shrink operations down to 10am - 3pm (M-F) and do not open on the weekends over breaks.  Summer Orientation times we are usually open 7am - 5pm (M-F).
