Coat Rack / Coat Check Services

Posted by Elizabeth Fouche on Dec 13, 2018 11:11 am

Recently, a few customers have inquired about a coat rack/check service for our major event spaces (Ballroom and Auditorium). Currently we have no rack as it doesn't get too too cold here in Florida, and no one had ever asked before. I am curious as to what other institutions and event services departments do as far as coat racks/checking.

- What type of equipment/rack does your school use?
- Is there a fee inquired by customers upon request?
- Is the coat rack always available?
- Do you rent/borrow from another source when someone has requested it?
- If you provide a check service, how do you staff it?

Any info is helpful! Thank you!

Hello Elizabeth-
Here in wintry Ohio, coat racks are our thing! We actually have about 20 in the building that we can use for multiple events at once, including larger functions in our ballroom or performance hall.
The attached photos include one of our racks in action today, a close-up of the hangers (this is actually an important decision!) and our coat check tags.
To answer your specific questions:
- What type of equipment/rack does your school use? the rack pictured is one that collapses in the middle for easy transport around the building, and compact storage when not in use. ACUI Procure would be a great place to start if you're looking for options!
- Is there a fee inquired by customers upon request?  Yes and no. If someone just needs one rack, we don't always charge. For larger events with lots of racks, it's a $10-20 charge per rack depending on client type.
- Is the coat rack always available? Yes
- Do you rent/borrow from another source when someone has requested it? No, all of ours are owned and in-house.
- If you provide a check service, how do you staff it? Our catering staff usually staffs a coat check, using the tags pictured. This is why hangers are important.

The hangers that came with the racks when we bought them were thick black plastic ones, and the loop didn't accommodate a coat check tag. See this link for an example. So staff were taping the tags on every time, or using rubber bands. It was awful! Being the benevolent leader that I am, I suggested we just buy hangers that worked better, and sent the old ones off to campus surplus, presumably to become someone else's problem. The hangers we have now are much better, more efficient for the staff and our guests (when used in a non-check manner), and everyone is much happier.

If you have other questions, let me know!

Jeff,

Thank you so much! Your info is very helpful. I am bringing this to my department's operations meeting next week, so I am sure I will have more questions.

Thanks again,
Elizabeth Fouche
