Appliances in Student Organization Offices

Posted by Carly Samuels on Oct 12, 2018 1:16 pm

I was wondering if anyone had any policies regarding student organizations being permitted or not permitted to have small appliances (mini fridges, microwaves, coffee makers, etc) in their offices?  Any insight would be appreciated, thanks for your help!

Hi Carly,

We don't have a policy per say, but we do address this in training. They are highly discouraged as they can use a lot of unnecessary energy, they must be maintained regularly, and it is up to the students to maintain them. Once they start smelling the outcome their decision, they get it! Some offices are much better than others at keeping up with them but most organizations have them. I only keep a coffee maker in our office (Club Activities) and I take responsibility since I use it the most.

Our policy states the following:

We do allow Student Government Main offices to have them, just not the club room offices.

Hope this helps

Hello Carly,

We do not have a written policy as of yet, but due to the number of times students were setting off fire alarms because of unattended microwaves and coffeepots, we no longer allow those types of appliances. We do allow mini-fridges. A few times a year (during breaks) our staff will inspect those fridges for stale or leftover food. Organizations will receive a warning if we discover mold etc. and may risk losing the privilege if this habit continues.

We are considering allowing Kuerig-like devices.
