I've been asked to see if any institutions have any sort of specific IT "generalist" positions either in your departments or division, ideally someone that is spearate from the institution's main IT dept? Maybe they handles functional administration and training for things like scheduling/diagramming software, other Union/Student Affairs specific software or systems, maybe they also handle A/V questions/training, etc. I'd be interested in seeing job descriptions for any positions that might come close. Bonus if you could also share salary ranges as well. Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hello Jon,

Here at Northwestern University, specifically at the Norris University Center, we saw the need for audio-visual professionals to supplement our event support services.  Norris is primarily student-staffed and supported, however with advancing technologies and event needs, having professionals to support the technologically complex elements of spaces and events has been important.

Even though this position is primarily focused on AV, the Technical Specialist has extended into becoming the de facto IT expert for the building outside of the NUIT departments.  While "Specialist," is in the title, it has really become more of a "generalist" of specializations.  I've linked the job description for your reference, however, there is much more involved than the focus of the posting.  Student training, scheduling, diagram software, reservation software, etc... have all been involved with this position throughout its existence.  Thus is the nature of event support!

I hope this helps and I'm more than happy to discuss further!

    Jon -
We have 2 IT people assigned to "Student Affairs" one of which the Centers pays for. One person is more of an entry level position that helps with inventory of computers, basic maintenance, TEAMS consultation, etc. The other is a more senior position that manages our Cbord issues related to our card system, registers, dining, door access, etc.  Both are kept pretty busy.
