  • 1.  Having a Nintendo Switch in a Public Game Room

We've been having video game tournament's in our game room for a while now, and one of our most requested tournaments to host is for a game on the Nintendo Switch.  We would love to hold a tournament and make the switch available for students to play for students with leisure time.  However, our biggest concern is that the switch may be stolen.  Is there any way to prevent the switch from being stolen?  Or is there a way to lock down the screen?

    Hi Jonathan,

We have a switch in our game room.  We have it installed in this lock case to prevent theft: https://secure-entertainment.com/shop/nintendo-switch/ Once of the nice things about the switch is the games can all be downloaded - no physical media that can walk off. We keep the controllers at the desk for check out.  It has been a huge hit with our students, and Mario Kart and Smash tournaments are guaranteed to bring in a crowd. Hope this helps!

    Best,
    Summer

We also use the lock case that Summer listed then require a student ID for the controllers. We are still getting the word out through, so no issues so far. Would you mind sharing how you organize tournaments around the switch?

    Thanks!

Thank you very much Summer, do you normally have Students RSVP for a Smash Bros/Mario Kart tournament, or just let them play as they come in?

    Hi Jonathan,

We have it available for students to use for whatever their gaming needs are during our game room hours.  We also have many of our student groups/RAs reserve the space specifically for that purpose.  Reservations/events take priority but we do have a rule here that events in that space must be open for all comers.

To the other question of how these are run.  We have four controllers here (we do the joycons with the grips you can buy cheap on amazon) so a student group/RA simply registers and advertises the event and then checks out all the controllers at the front desk. At the event they usually do a traditional bracket or round robin style competition.  More competitive groups do 1-1 matches, while more causal groups will do larger rounds and rate based on the end of match scores.

    Thanks!

    Summer

Hi Jonathon, I'm interested in this topic as well.  We often take the person's ID and hold it at the desk until they return the equipment.
Another option is to have the student sign a statement that they will be charged the replacement cost of the equipment in case it is damaged, lost or stolen.  This is a bit more cumbersome but Switch's are expensive

    Jonathan - See this link:

This company makes a variety of acrylic lock boxes for gaming systems.  We lock-up and secure all of gaming devices using acrylic boxes.   I believe someone else in this string made a similar recommendation.  Good luck.
