The University of Wisconsin-Madison will launch its first online degree program in fall.  Students in this program will not pay any student fees.  They will pay tuition only and likely will be provided with a student ID.  For those of you who have online degree programs in which students don't pay student fees are you providing any programs/services for these students?  Are you limiting their access to programs/services?  And how are you helping them "feel" like a member of your campus community?

    Thanks.

    Hi Susan,
At UW Oshkosh, we have some online degree programs (and plan to add more).  We charge these students 25% of the Segregated Fees, because technically, the Seg. Fee is not a "user fee".  It is similar to taxes, in that everyone pays whether or not they use the services provided by the tax, e.g. K-12 public schools.

Currently, we don't provide Seg. Fee related services to on-line students that are different from on-campus students; however, we just had a discussion about how we could provide specific services.  Some ideas that arose were: recording speakers so students could watch remotely or at a later date, making sure information is shared with online students about resources available that are already online (e.g. resume review, health information), and surveying these students to find out what they need/want.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi Susan, at Oregon State University the Online Degree Program is named Ecampus. https://ecampus.oregonstate.edu/

This program has seen double digit percentage growth over the last few years while our Corvallis campus enrollment has declined.  While I strongly support online learning, we need to recognize the financial impacts of fee funded departments such as the Memorial Union (MU).  OSU is also experiencing many students blending online classes with "brick and mortar" classes thereby reducing the student fee as well.
The Ecampus students do not have access to services such as our Recreation Center and other unit that require a card swipe access. Ecampus students cannot serve on our Advisory Boards since this group votes on our budget presented to our student government.

We do not distinguish who uses our facility since we're open to the public.  We also have a few student employees who are solely Ecampus students.  Many of us are in conversation about the long-term trend and the funding models for student fee funded programs and facilities.
