We are exploring creating a digital signage advertising program for the external community.  I am interested to see what programs others have in place for external advertising.   What parameters do you have in place for controlling content of the advertisements, are there restrictions on who can advertise, etc?

    Jamie,

At Miami University, we partner with our housing and dining operation to offer packages that include just student center advertising or the student center along with dining venues and residence halls.  There is also a half screen, free option for student organizations.  We charge a small amount, partly so that we can manage volume.  Fees also go to cover the cost of the digital signage management software that is used by our campus (Four Winds).

We do not allow off campus businesses to advertise through this process.

If you want to know more, please feel free to reach out.

    Hi Jamie,

Below is the policy information for external clients at Temple University's Student Center.  No restrictions are in place for who can advertise, but we do have certain rules for content.  External clients can also submit flyers to bulletin boards in our building, they are not able to utilize poster locations or social media content. https://studentcenter.temple.edu/advertise-here

The following guidelines must be adhered to:
    • Name of sponsoring group must be clearly stated on each slide.
    • Slides making references to the consumption of alcohol or those that are sexually explicit will not be approved. Advertising of tobacco products is prohibited.
    • Approval for display will not be granted for those slides that promote anything in violation of Temple University policies and procedures.
    • Slides will not be displayed using the words SAC or Student Activity Center.
    • Slides should be landscape in orientation and sent as a JPEG or PDF. Ideally, slides should be set up as a wide format PowerPoint (16:9) and saved out to be sent as a JPEG or PDF

Up to 2 slides may be submitted in a given 4 week period. Both slides will run for 2 weeks -either consecutively or concurrently. Please inform preference of schedule in e-mail submission.  The cost for 2 slides for 2 weeks of display is $75.00. Each additional 4 week period constitutes another set and is subject to a new approval and fee. Checks may be made payable to Temple University. Payment is required prior to posting.

    Hope this helps!

We do this at the University of Alberta.

    Here's some info: SUTV

We use an in-house, web-based content management system to manage the screens, and a Raspberry Pi-based player.  It lacks the features of some commercial solutions, but provides much finer-grained distribution and content control, as befitting a system which can adapt to the needs of *any* department on campus. It's also way cheaper.

We began in SUB, but the system (and our terms) appealed to many other units and areas on campus that had under-utilized screens.  We've become the default digital signage system, and have grown organically to 125 screens at the U of A and about another 50 at other schools in Canada.

We do license our software to some other student unions in Canada.

We are averaging $100K annually in revenue, about 70% from University departments (we are not actually part of administration, but rather an independent, student-run corporation) and 30% from commercial enterprises.

Feel free to reach out to Nigel Brachi (nigel.brachi@su.ualberta.ca) if anyone would like more information.

Our digital signage system (Four Winds) has been in place for about seven years.  We sell advertising to student organizations, campus departments and off-campus advertisers.  Each have different rates.  I am attaching our rate sheet and guidelines for reference.

In the beginning we were hoping for this to be revenue stream for us, but it's not.  We make some money on it, but not enough to cover our signage costs.  However, it has allowed us to cut down on paper signage throughout the building which is incredibly helpful and much more visually appealing.
