We do this at the University of Alberta.
Here's some info:
SUTVWe use an in-house, web-based content management system to manage the screens, and a Raspberry Pi-based player. It lacks the features of some commercial solutions, but provides much finer-grained distribution and content control, as befitting a system which can adapt to the needs of *any* department on campus. It's also way cheaper.
We began in SUB, but the system (and our terms) appealed to many other units and areas on campus that had under-utilized screens. We've become the default digital signage system, and have grown organically to 125 screens at the U of A and about another 50 at other schools in Canada.
We do license our software to some other student unions in Canada.
We are averaging $100K annually in revenue, about 70% from University departments (we are not actually part of administration, but rather an independent, student-run corporation) and 30% from commercial enterprises.
Feel free to reach out to Nigel Brachi (
nigel.brachi@su.ualberta.ca) if anyone would like more information.

Subject: Digital Signage Advertising
We are exploring creating a digital signage advertising program for the external community. I am interested to see what programs others have in place for external advertising. What parameters do you have in place for controlling content of the advertisements, are there restrictions on who can advertise, etc?
