  • 1.  Assessment Tools for Understanding Community and Belonging in the Union

    Hi Everyone!

I am interested in creating an assessment tool for better understanding our Union's impact on creating a sense of community and belonging.  Does anyone here at ACUI have any tips, tricks or instruments for capturing this data from our campus constituents?

    Thanks in advance!

    Bradley

The Skyfactor College Union survey has questions that can help inform you about how your student center fosters a sense of belonging at your institution. In addition to asking some direct questions that you can use to benchmark against other participants in the survey, the attached research reports demonstrates how this data can be used to inform the retention conversation on your campus.

At Miami University, we have also used the NASPA Consortium Student Unions and Programming survey which has some questions about community and robust benchmarking.

Please feel free to reach out if you would like more information on these surveys.

Thank you Katie!  We have participated in the EBI assessment consistently in years past; I'm excited to get this back up and into our assessment cycle.  I will also look into the NASPA survey.  I appreciate your response!

    Dear Bradley,

Such a great question and one that I hope many of us dig deeper into exploring how we measure this sense of community we know our students are experiencing with our programs, facilities, and services.  A few suggestions to offer:

    • My research was on this very topic and my dissertation, which includes my methodology and interview protocol are in the full document.  I'm happy to discuss approval to use this if you'd like to re-conduct the study at your institution.
    • In my research, I used (with advance permission) the Brief Sense of Community Scale (BSCS) created by Peterson, Speer, & McMillan
    • A final and more comprehensive tool to consider is the Sense of Community Index, which also would need permission for use.

    Good luck,

Thanks Justin!  Great timing actually.  I just found and read through your research last week!  Very serendipitous that you responded here on the ACUI Forum .  Thanks for the additional resources.  I will be sure to dive into these.

    Best wishes!

    Bradley
