    Hello!

Do any of your institutions allow clubs to collect money for fundraisers via Venmo or Cashapp? If so, could you tell me how this happens behind the scenes!  What account is the Venmo linked up to? Does each club have their own account on Venmo, or is there one school account that all the funds are deposited in? We are old-school and still use cash for everything. Thank you!

    Hi Tessa,

We were having a big problem with apps like Venmo a few years ago, so we started a Declining Balance card program.  Students can take an online course and apply for debit cards that have been loaded up with funds from their accounts.  It is run through out Student Organization Finance Office (which is under our operations umbrella).  You can read more about it at sofo.wfu.edu.  I'd be happy to put you in touch with the person who designed the program if you're interested.

Hi there!  So we just updated our policies during COVID to allow for student groups to use Venmo and Cashapp, but only for fundraising and most use it for bake sales when they are at a vendor table.  We did have to make a policy that states that they cannot use it for ticket sales to events, as that was entirely too confusing on the backend of things.

For the fundraising, the venmo or cash app is one of the students accounts, it does not matter if it is personal or a group account, but within 72 hours of the reservation/fundraising, the group must provide the cash or check to our Student Funds Account for deposit.  They include a receipt of all of the deposits along with the cash/check deposit. Then our business manager deposits it into their account.

If you are looking for more backend information, please let me know and I can connect you with our business manager.

    Thanks!

Ithaca College's Office of Student Engagement allows student organizations to use crowd-funding apps as an alternative or addition to collecting cash.  The policies and request form can be found halfway down our Treasurer Responsibilities website here.  My understanding is that the Venmo (or similar) account an org uses is almost always a student's personal account.  The student is then responsible for transferring all funds collected into their student organization account with the help of our on-campus bank location.  I do not work with this process so I am not very familiar with it, but happy to direct questions to my colleague if anyone has them.
