  • 1.  Amplified Sound/Live Performance Policy

    Posted 07-19-2021 14:17
Looking to see if anyone has an "amplified sound" or "live performance policy" for their union or campus.  Looking for language around when and where performances with amplified sound, acoustic instruments/vocals, etc. can happen.  We are trying to discourage these types of events in non-reservable spaces in our building but don't have a written policy for this specifically.  Or if there is a policy you have that is titled something else for the same purpose, I would appreciate your sharing it.

    Thanks in advance!
    Kristen

    Hi Kristen,

Here is our policy around sound:

Portable radios, personal audio devices, or other sound devices should be used with earphones in the public areas of the Armstrong Student Center. Any amplified sound within the building or on terraces must be approved in advance from the Armstrong Student Center Office.

If a group wants to do any performance, like a flash acapella song, they need to get it approved by the Director before the performance. This policy lives on our website and has historically only been an issue with a couple of events every year, so we try to be proactive and have conversations with them at the very beginning of planning about making sure they are not amplifying sound in non-reservable event space.

Let me know if there is any other information that would be helpful!

    Best,

    Hi Kristen,
Yes we have an Amplified Sound Policy.  Below is the general policy and here's the link to our form.  Approval is based on time and day of the event using amplified sound so it doesn't interfere with surrounding classes on the academic mall etc.

All outdoor events utilizing amplified sound need prior written approval from the Office of the Dean of Students. This applies to all events regardless of the sponsoring organization (student, departmental, external). The only exceptions are events held by Athletics on their fields.

This request must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the event. The organization must comply with sound levels in the surrounding community requests. If you have any questions, please contact Student Centers at studentcenters@stonybrook.edu

    Hello,

Here at the University of New Mexico Student Union we do not allow amplified sound in our third floor meeting rooms space only soft music such as acoustic. We do allow amplified sound in our ballrooms. In our atrium, which is in the center of the building, live amplified music is only permitted during lunch from 12pm to 1pm. We have this written into our building policy. Since we have offices within the building we want to be courteous to those in the office and do not allow the amplified music on the third floor and only from 12pm to 1pm in the atrium.

    Best of luck to you!

    Hi there,

Here is our amplified sound policy:

"Amplified sound is generally prohibited on campus, but may be permitted for official University and registered student organization events with the prior approval of the Director of Campus Activities or his/her designee.

Amplified sound of voice and recorded music on the Lory Student Center Plaza is permitted when approved in advance by LSC Event Planning Services, with a reservation. Live music may not be amplified on the Plaza. The event must take place during the normal office hours of Event Planning Services. Sound levels are not to exceed 80 decibels at any time. Due to the proximity of classrooms, offices, laboratories, and the library, an Event Planning Services staff member will monitor the sound level and may require lower sound levels when necessary to avoid undue disruption of others."

In practice, we allow amplified sound whenever we are providing the technical services and where we are able to have control over volume.  The 80 decibel limit is pretty arbitrary but it gives us a number that we can show on a decibel meter.  Most of the time we will be exceeding that limit but if we are providing the sound system, we chose how to manage the volume levels within reason.

    Hi Kristen -

Here is our policy on amplified sound:
Outdoor amplified sound is only allowed from 11:30am–1:00pm and 5:00pm–10:00pm, in designated
areas. Per policy, the maximum level of amplified sound for outdoors events is 92 decibels. Sound levels will be
regulated by the building manager through the use of a hand-held sound level meter. If amplified sound
policy is not followed, the event could be shut down.

This policy has worked pretty well and helped to ensure that events are not disruptive to classes or other activities.

    Hi Kristen/all-
Our "outdoor space rules" were recently reviewed and approved and are available here: https://freedomofexpression.osu.edu/documents/university-space-rules.pdf

I was part of the review committee so I'm happy to go into more detail offline if you have questions!

The Use of Sound section is as follows:
Due to the proximity of offices, residence halls, and classrooms, amplified sound and other loud noise is restricted (i.e., not permitted) Monday through Friday prior to 5:30pm and after 10:00pm; Saturday prior to noon and after midnight; and, Sunday prior to noon and after 10:00pm. Restricted noise is defined as noise disrupting the function of the University.
Noise that is disruptive includes, but is not limited to, amplified sound and other loud noise that is audible more than 50 feet from the source of the sound and/or noise occurring during the restricted hours above.

Exceptions to this rule may be granted, in its sole, discretion by the University in consideration of the duration of the sound, time during the academic semester, and type of amplified sound used. Exception requests must be submitted to studentlife@osu.edu for review a minimum of 48 hours prior to the event. Even when occurring during approved hours, noise should be kept at a reasonable level and the University may request that organizers adjust the volume if the sound is disrupting the function of the University.
