  • 1.  Commencement - Handshakes and Doc Hoodings

    Posted 07-09-2021 16:16

    Hi Y'all,
We are prepping for our Summer Commencement.  We are back to full capacity and no masks if you're vaccinated, *strongly encouraged* for non-vaccinated (We're in Georgia and a state school, so none of that part is debatable).  We are trying to figure out if we want to bring the handshake back, and if not, how to create "the moment" for the picture with the student and President as the graduate walks across the stage.  What are others doing? Regarding hooding doc graduates, are you hooding on stage, separate ceremony, or are graduates to arrive hooded?
Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!
    Jonathan

We had commencement ceremonies in May. It was a week-long with 7 ceremonies. Students from the past 4 graduating terms were allowed to participate. Masks were still required at that time for everyone participating and attending the event. As a student was walking across the stage, they were allowed to remove their mask for picture purposes. The president didn't shake hands with students, but did allow other acknowledgements (fist bump, elbow, etc.). The doctoral students had a separate commencement ceremony where they were hooded by a faculty member on stage. We don't do a summer commencement, those students are allowed to participate in the fall ceremony (December).
